Hi folks, Have 2x 1TB and 2 x 2TB drive in EX495. Folder duplication on. One 1TB one (the system disk) is failing and one of the 2TB pools are failing too. Have 2 new drives to put in. Quesiton is - how and in what order. Have read for just system disk replacement, you just pull faulty drive; system restore then restart and server will do the rest pulling data off pool drives... However, if replacing pool drive too - do i put in the two new drives at the same time or do system restore with just the 1TB pool drive in (hence copy over dupes to system drive) then insert 2TB pool and new 2 TB?? Really confusing and would really appreciate any advice. Thanks, Steve

"Network Critical" Backup Database Repair?
DID I KILL MY SERVER? PLEASE HELP! Okay – I now realize I didn’t kill it, but really thought I was close!) I hope someone can help. I have an EX 485 and, up until recently had the original 750gb hard drive in there. Things have been pretty fine since I’ve had it. Over the past few months, though, I’d keep getting the message that my hard one hard drive was unhealthy and I should repair. The message would go away on its own however, not due to anything I’d done. I decided it was time to at least get another hard drive in there for the inevitable death of that original. I bought 2 Western Digital 1tb drives. One about two weeks ago – added it to storage, no problems. Then, just today installed a second identical WD 1tb drive. At first I thought I wanted to install it to use as backup, but got the message that it needed to be partitioned. I searched the forums and threads, saw that it was possible, but I am not very expert, so instead I just decided to add it to my storage and turn on Folder Duplication for all my...

Windows Home Server Console locking up on EX 470
Greetings everyone. I am new to the HP Mediasmart server world. I recently scored an upgraded (2GB Ram) ex470 and I am in the process of moving data to it. It has the latest version of Windows server provided by HP. I was setting things up on the WHS console when other programs needing attention began popping up. As I am clicking I clicked at least one to many times and I clicked on something on the video conversion area. Now my data transfer rate has gone to a trickle, it takes a long time for the WHS console to even respond to any sort of commands and when I finally do make it to the tab for video conversion it freezes. I'm currently running chkdsk on my computer and I'm waiting for the results. I have about 4TB of data on there already and I am worried about attempting a restore due to possibly losing my data. I have the discs if I need to but I'm hoping someone can give me a path that avoids losing my data.

Can ping server but cannot connect to WHS
I was having problems with ip conflicts and decided to give all my home (not mobile) devices static IP addresses. Since then, I can ping my WHS, but I cannot connect. It is "headless", so I can't connect a monitor/keyboard and log in. The IP address is 10.66.255.5 and the ping comes back in less than 1 ms, but Remote Login and the Home Server Console cannot connect. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks Gordon

Need to install WHS on second hand EX470 with brand new drive.
The Short Story: I need the recovery disk for the EX470 or if anyone can point me in the direction of how to install WHS Power Pack 3 via a usb drive that will work too. I need it to have a 32bit server OS. The Long Story: My employer was going to throw away two 495's, a 485, and a 470. All with no drives. I had never heard of mediasmart servers before but I am a bit of a tech hardware packrat so I took them. After I brought them home I did a little research. I was able to pop in an old hard drive I wasn't using and install WHS 2011 on one of the 495s. That's running like a dream hosting my home media right now. I upgraded the other 495 to WHS 2011 and gave that to my dad. Now I have a coworker who needs a server running a 32 bit OS. They have old workstations to connect to (Windows ME, XP). I have a copy of WHS PowerPack 3 with product key that I can install but I hear the easiest way is to use a recovery disk. I was going to...

I now have a new lap top w/ Win 8. I can find and see the items on the media server, but I can't create new folders or add anything to the media server. It has my old pics and I need to add new pics.. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks, Kevin

Can't connect to EX495 after installation on new network
Hi guys... need some help here. I moved to a new house recently and have set up a new network with a new DNS server. The DNS server in the new house is an Apple Airport Extreme as opposed to a Leviton Internate Gateway in my old place. In my old house I had most of my machines set up with static and reserved IP addresses. The short of it is that now on the new network I cant connect to my EX495. I'm guessing its becuase the EX 495 is set up to connect with the old network amd DNS server. Luckly for me I had a back up of all of the files on the EX495... so I have my files... but my EX 495 is now a paperweight. I'd like to get it up and running. The server restore doesnt seem to work. It cant find the server on the network. I think I even tried plugging it directly into my workstation but that didnt work either. Would you guys recommend that I do? I need to get the server back to factory settings but I have no idea how I am supposed to do that if...

Can't Open HS Console
Hi all - hoping someone can help. I just replaced the power supply on my EX 485, and all seems to have gone well except for the fact that I can no longer access the server from my PC via the console. I can REmote Desktop into it and open the console there, I can ping the server and I have access to all my files. I just can't open the console from the PC. I can put my password in, but then get an error message. I ran discovery.exe, and that also let me put the password in but would not complete the action. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mediasmart WHS Help!
I need some advice on retrieving files from my windows Media Smart home server. I was moving some pictures around yesterday on the server and it became unreachable. Cound't ping or RDP or anything. I tried rebooting and nothing helped. The health light is flashing a constant blue. I removed the 1Tb hard drive and plug it into a spare slot on my desktop. When I power on my desktop I can see two new drives on my computer. A System D: drive and Data E: drive. When I explore the E: drive I can see all my folders and files in the shared folder. The files all look to be fine and the server is showing 500Mb/1Tb used. The issue is that when I try to open any of the files or copy any of them to my desktop I get an error. Am I doing something wrong with the retrieval? The files all seems to be there but it seems like the D: drive just is not booting properly. Any advice on how to retrieve the data from the E: data drive? Thanks

VHD data recovery
Virtual hard disk represents storage space on the virtual machine. There may be one or several virtual hard disks on a host computer. MS window 7 and 2008 R2 versions have inbuilt tool to create virtual hard disk on host computer. Virtual hard disk is stored as .VHD file in the physical drive of a host computer. VHD file are categorized as dynamically expanding and fixed size VHD. The fixed sized VHD file can utilize the free space of the physical drive of the host computer. You can configure any external or portable storage devices as virtual machines in your computer. Read More :- http://www.undeletepcfiles.com/vhd-data-recovery-tool.html

EX470 NOT WORKING!! -HELP
Hello, I haven't been using my Ex470 in a long time and decided this past week to pull it off the shelf and try using it again. I had issues with it in the past with loss of data so I "retired" it and was using another system for backing up my data. But I decided to give this one more try.... So, I upgraded the RAM to 2GB (from 512MB) and just bought a Seagate 4TB drive to replace the old system drive (500GB) with the fresh new 4TB drive. But now, when I turn on the machine, all 4 lights turn solid RED and the health indicator flickers solid PURPLE. When I try to hold down the power button to shut off the machine, it won't turn off. I have to unplug the power chord from the machine in order for it to turn off. I tried turning it back on again and pressing the Reset button with a paperclip to get it to Recovery Mode but nothing changes and the Server Recovery can't find it on the computer when I pop in the Server Recovery Disk... Thankfully I don't have any data in there that needs to...

EX470 solid red/blue health & solid red HD lights
Came home from work and tried to access some files with no luck. Checked the 470 and it was powered off. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I held the power button down and still nothing. I pulled the power cord, waited a few and plugged it back in, then was able to start the server with the power button. When it came to life, all hard drive lights were solid red and the health indicator was slow flashing purple (red/blue). I attemped to reboot with the power button and nothing happened both with single push as well as 4+ second push. I pulled the power cord again and it shut down. Plugged it back in and powered on with same results but the purple (red/blue) light flashed once and stayed on. Pulled power, pulled all but the system drive, powered back on and still had all 4 HD lights solid red. Pulled power again and pulled the system drive... same thing all 4 HD lights were solid red. Is this going to be a Mobo issue or maybe a power supply issue? The LED's were flickering a bit during this time. Also tried the restore program, but...

Removing and Replacing HDDs
Hello I have a MediaSmart EX490. A couple of weeks ago I removed two 1TB WD Caviar Blacks and replaced with two 2TB WD Reds in bays 2+3. The transfer was done as a Hot Swap in accordance with the recommended routine and has been successful. The bay 1 (bottom) remains unchanged. I made the mistake of installing the new drives without recording the serial numbers which I need for the WD Care Express Registration. Question – Nothing is changing - ""Is it permissible to remove and replace the two HDDS COLD (server switched off) for me to obtain the information I require. If not what is the recommended routine""? Regards - Bill Twigger PS - I read on the forum that the EX490 will not recognised any storage above 2TB. Is there any way this can be changed to 3TB

Need New Hard Drives For Server
I currently have an ex485 where the system drive and 1 of my storage drives are going bad, it seems that the drives dont last very long on my server for some reason this is the second batch of drives that went bad, is this normal? My hard drives at work which run about 10 hours a day never went bad and the server runs about 5 hours a day. I wanted to know if replacing the system drive with the new samsung 850 evo ssd last longer? the ssd has a 10 year warranty and a 150tbw. Not really sure how to make it fit since the ex485 doesnt really have an input for ssd, just normal hd. Regarding the storage drive what would you recommend, i was looking around the 4tb range thanks in advance

Health light blinking blue, No hard drive lights.
I inadvertantly unplugged my Media Smart Server. When I plugged it back in and turned it on, there are no lights for any of the drives, and the health light is blinking blue. I tried pulling each drive and cleaning the dust out and resetting them. I also pulled the power cord out and held the power switch in to discharge any residual power. Any other suggestions?
